You want to know why I think that a sex strike needs to happen in this country over the issue of reproductive rights? Because this is the kind of horrendous bullshit that goes on in the Christian Taliban state formerly known as Kansas:
Neuhaus was hoping to have her full medical license restored after spending years only allowed to provide limited medical care for charity work. Instead, an ongoing investigation into 11 patient cases obtained by Operation Rescue became the center of a movement to have her license stripped all together.
The cases all involved girls who sought abortions due to mental health issues from depression to suicide, with an age range from 17 years old to as young as 10. The board alleged that Neuhaus’s exams were not thorough enough based on the available records provided, and that her follow up care was inadequate, as she did not recommend counseling or hospitalization afterwards.
Ann Neuhaus is a former colleague of Dr. George Tiller, the abortion doctor who was targeted by terrorists working with the psychopaths in Operation Rescue for years until they finally killed him in 2009. Neuhaus was apparently working on getting her full license back in full so she could re-introduce the services that have been non-existent in that part of Kansas since Tiller’s assassination. However now Neuhaus has lost all ability to practice medicine. Sadly, this was the result of of both the byzantine procedural framework set up by Governor Brownback specifically to discourage Doctors from being able to provide legal abortions, and (of course) Operation Rescue.
How was Operation Rescue able to do this? Well it helps to be appointed directly onto the medical board responsible for overseeing this process. Richard Macias, a former Operation Rescue attorney, is now on the Kansas Board of Healing Arts, which is responsible for regulating abortions. How convenient. After that it was just a matter of dragging the process out to be as expensive and burdensome as possible, while simultaneously threatening Neuhaus with discovery requests that threatened the anonymity of her patients.
Like digby says, these people are sadists, pure and simple. The strategy of effectively nullifying a legal right as onerous and difficult as possible works, especially when you have pious fascists like Sam Brownback helping to facilitate the effort via the power of the government. Whether this sort of embarrassing campaign started out as a delusion concerning “morality” or whether it was always intended to be a tool to exert control over female bodies, there is no possible justification for forcing a ten year old to give birth and then claim that an abortion was not “medically necessary”. However I think that Neahaus said it best:
“To even claim that isn’t medically necessary qualifies as gross incompetence,” said Neuhaus. “Someone’s 10 years old, and they were raped by their uncle and they understand that they’ve got a baby growing in their stomach and they don’t want that. You’re going to send this girl for a brain scan and some blood work and put her in a hospital?”
Still think that there is no war against women?
